Five Signs Your Business Needs a New Sign Shop in Melbourne's West

Most businesses do not think about their sign shop until a sign fails or a shop moves. Then it is urgent, the old supplier has retired or stopped answering, and the job goes to whoever picks up the phone. Here are the tells that it is time to change suppliers before that happens, and what to look for in the next one.
1. Your sign is fading and nobody mentioned it
Printed signs facing west in Melbourne fade. A good sign shop tells you how long a material should look sharp when they quote it, and a better one notices when they drive past. If your fascia has gone pink and the shop that made it has never followed up, the relationship is a transaction, not a service.
2. The quote takes weeks, or never comes
A sign quote needs a photo and a measurement, not a site survey by a committee. If you sent both and are still waiting, the shop is either overloaded or not interested in jobs your size. Either way your opening date is not their problem. A shop set up for small businesses turns a quote around in a day or two.
3. Nobody will take the old sign down
Some suppliers print the panel, courier it to you and leave the rest to a handyman you now have to find. Removal of the previous tenant's sign, making good the fascia, fitting the new one and taking the rubbish away are the actual job. A sign shop that installs across the west does all of it in one visit.
4. You get a sign and nothing else
A sign is one piece of a brand. If the sign shop cannot also print the business cards, the flyers, the window graphics and the A-frame in the same colours from the same artwork, you end up with four suppliers and four slightly different greens. One supplier for print and signs is simpler and the colours match.
5. You never saw a proof
The expensive mistake in signage is finding out at installation that the phone number is wrong or the letters are too small to read from the road. A to-scale proof on a photo of your actual shop front, approved by you before production, prevents it. A shop that skips the proof is saving its own time with your money.
What to look for instead
- Local and reachable. Someone who can be at your shop this week, in your suburb, and answers the phone.
- Measures, designs, prints and installs. One trade on site, old sign gone, new sign fitted, mess cleaned up.
- Proofs everything. By email, to scale, before production.
- Explains the material. How long it lasts, what the next grade up costs, when a light box is worth it.
- Does the print too. So the sign, the cards and the flyers come from one file and match.
Colorbourne Graphics has done that from Melton since 2010, for shop fronts across Melbourne's west. If your current supplier has gone quiet, a photo of your shop front to sales@colorbourne.com.au gets a quote back without the wait.
Quick answers
How do I know a sign shop installs its own signs?
Ask who will be on the ladder. A shop that installs will tell you the day, the people and whether the old sign comes down. A shop that only prints will talk about couriers.
Should I expect a proof before a sign is made?
Always. A proof is a to-scale picture of the sign on your shop front, by email, that you approve before anything is cut or printed. No proof, no order.
Is the cheapest quote a bad idea?
Not necessarily, but find out what it leaves out. The common gaps are installation, removal of the old sign and the material grade. A cheap quote that excludes all three is not cheap.
